JPEG2000 is the new image compression standard defined by the JPEG-Group.
JPEG2000 Advantages:
- Significantly better peak signal-to-noise ratio performance then JPEG provides
- Inherent scalability. Progessive transmission, wich provides the gradual buildup of an image by resolution (spatial scalability), pixel accuracy (signal-to-noise scalability) or precinct (image region of interest)
- Content based description
- Conducive to image security support
